SAVE RIPPON GRANGE - STOP HIGH RISES HITTING WAHROONGA (click here)

Welcome to the home page of the Wahroonga Conservation Group. The Wahroonga Conservation Group is a non party political group dedicated to the conservation of the historic Wahroonga urban area. We support the right of owners to develop their land provided it is in keeping with the existing density and street character of the surrounding neigbourhood.

Wahroonga is located approximately 23 kilometres north of the Sydney Central Business District and has a population of just over 22,000 people. The name Wahroonga is an aboriginal word meaning "our home".

According to latest research, Wahroonga was the first Garden Suburb in Australia, predating Haberfield by about 5 years.

The main focus of this site is to catalogue some of the unique heritage properties in Wahroonga. Click on the links in the left hand column to view these historic homes and to read a little about the history and architecture of each.

For more detail on the houses, their architects and the suburb in general we recommend the following books:

"Six of the Best Architects of Ku-Ring-Gai", by Zeny Edwards, (1998).

"The Railway came to Ku-ring-gai", by Kerrin Cook (1991)

Both books contains a wealth of material on historic homes in Wahroonga and are available at BOOKS ETCETERA, 5 Railway Avenue Wahroonga. Much of the background text and some of the older photographs on this site are reproduced from these books with the kind permission of Zeny Edwards and Kerrin Cook.

A number of these properties, and the suburb in general, are under threat from proposed medium density developments. These developments often masquerade as SEPP5 (now Senior Living SEPP) developments.

We welcome your feedback and suggestions so please feel free to use the "Contact Us" link.
