The Wahroonga Conservation Group is a
non party political group dedicated to the conservation of the historic
Wahroonga urban area. We support the right of owners to develop their land
provided it is in keeping with the existing density and street character of the
surrounding neighbourhood. Large sections of Wahroonga are characterised by large single dwelling sites, many of which are heritage listed. The result is a suburb with distinct character and historic importance. In recent times the large parcels of land have been targeted by developers seeking to build medium density housing. This often masquerades as SEPP5 (now Senior Living SEPP), old persons, development. These developments have been threatening to destroy the unique character of our suburb and the Wahroonga Conservation Group is dedicated to opposing such unsuitable development and to maintaining the unique character of our suburb. The main focus of this site is to catalogue some of the unique heritage properties in Wahroonga. Click on the links in the left hand column to view these historic homes and to read a little about the history and architecture of each. For more detail on the houses, their architects and the suburb in general we recommend the following books: "Six of the Best Architects of Ku-Ring-Gai", by Zeny Edwards, (1998). "The Railway came to Ku-ring-gai", by Kerrin Cook (1991) Both books contains a wealth of material on historic homes in Wahroonga and are available at BOOKS ETCETERA, 5 Railway Avenue Wahroonga. Some of the background text and some of the older photographs on this site are reproduced from these books with the kind permission of Zeny Edwards and Kerrin Cook.
